This whole debacle has occurred because our owners are 'risk-averse' Bilic has been told in no uncertain terms about that not getting relegated is more important than anything else.

They should at least refund the ticket price. I know it's bugger all but at least it would be some statement of apology.

I have to say whilst I think more on this is comes to fact (and I'm not comparing squads) but i don't see too luch rotation of the Chelsea/Man U/ team that plays in the CL on weds and then at the weekend. Are our players real that frail?

Anyway even if we get trounced by Arsenal I'm not going to wet my knickers yet.

Yes people would begrudge it. I remember vividly on here people going mad about Pardew resting players in the league with during our FA Cup run. I know that was years ago but it'd be the same.

some perspective here

We were only in the Europa League because Allardyce decided to stop trying to win games in the second half of the season It's early format and demands on a squad that, let's face it, was not good enough to qualify on merit, means it is a poison pill we could do without. Thus, I am in full agreement with the decision to use the second string and youth for these early rounds and could not care less that we are out. That they have had this experiences will I tthink bode well for us as the season progresses

We are a team in transition and have some good signings to view. Let them bed in and gel together as a team before passing judgment, and hopefully we will be good enough to qualify on merit either via the cups or via a league placing

That I do look forward to

Agreed with below. Fact is our best eleven is likely to come away with a loss vs Arsenal anyway so why not go for it last night and then close our eyes and fingers crossed for Sunday.

Nobody would grudge bilic losing his first prem game away to arsenal and we would still have Europa to keep the mood buoyant.

As it is, many are fucked off now with him and we will probably go down on Sunday. So two lows in a week.

I do have a funny feeling though in the back of my mind that Payet is going to launch himself on the scene in a big way Sunday. That could just be a sugar rush though.

I am going to reserve judgement until we have played the first four league games and the league cup match.

Glenn Hoddle thinks we will struggle next season, he commented on BT Sport.... Let's see

Also I have no problem with Nolan playing a European game for us, but I would never ever pick him to play one of the high-energy wider roles in a midfield diamond at 33. That's a really stupid tactical decision imo.

Re: Astra FC v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT (2-1) 4-3 agg
There's so much talk about the team selection last night. But it should be remembered that the formation was basically a bust on the night, there was no width and we struggled to create anything, yet nothing was ever changed throughout the match. Also the senior players were poor, defensively we were disorganised, and I thought the subs were all made way too late.

There's more to criticise than just the team selection. And in the circumstances I thought the youngsters largely played pretty well, so I'm not even sure that was the issue. From what I've seen and heard of this campaign, we've had a poor run of six matches even with the stronger selections.

Re: Astra FC v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT (2-1) 4-3 agg
Not only that, but you've then got scouting the oppo, going over plans/tactics to counter the oppo, instilling those ideas upon the team, with a game every few days non stop the chance to prepare for any one game on an ongoing basis is essentially lost unless you can essentially run a squad that operates as two teams across the campaigns.

We're not in that place yet.

I do agree we should have suffered it until the group stages though, and then done what we have done this round in the group stages (at which point the knock out aspect of doing it is no longer an issue).

Stubbo makes a good point about lack of time for training and getting the new manager and his methods established. But this is still very disappointing and Bilic has a lot to do to justify his decision.

Missed opportunity here

Should have played A team to get through, Arsenal away win, lose or draw won't defy our season.

Playing the 2nd 11 at Arsenal.

If wed have got through it gives the 2nd 11 games, at least 6 plus cup games, say 10, good for bringing back injured players back in the frame as well.

Once w had seen how the league is going, say xmas, we'd know by then if a relegation battle was on, if not, change priorities and have a go

Total waste of time how we went about this

Re: Astra FC v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT (2-1) 4-3 agg
At least some people seem to get it. In our financial position we need the money from the PL to gradually improve and be in a stronger position.
We aren't a stable premiership club guaranteed a top 10 spot, our form in the second half of last year is proof of that.
Patience and good decisions are what is needed. Even bringing in a sugar daddy isn't a guarantee of improvement. Look at QPR and the mess they are in or Blackburn before them.

We don't know if Bilic is a good decision or not yet but it seems none of the other highly rated managers were interested so we are where we are and need to show some support and see what the season holds.

Supporting West Ham is always a roller coaster ride.

I watched on a stream last night which is not the best way to judge a player but Henry came over as a stand out performer. He shouldn't have backed off so much for the first but then I thought that had Adrian played he would have saved it.

Stubbo 10:46 Fri Aug 7
Re: Astra FC v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT (2-1) 4-3 agg
It's unfortunately a fact of modern football that the PL has to take all priority. The money is too big.

What we're playing for is slow, gradual improvement, that can see us qualifying for the likes of the EL on merit through league position and domestic cups, and then be in a position where we can play our second string away and first XI at home and be competitive doing so.

At the moment we're not, but then we did only finish 12 and with the way we were playing were lucky to get that.

Don't forget Spurs took a very similar approach to us last year...difference being their Elliott Lee turned out to be Harry Kane who used the EL to force his way into the 1st team.

But they played kids and back ups away from home...theirs were just better than ours
